Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT
BESG: VALUING INDIVIDUALS

We encourage everyone to become responsible, happy, confident, life-long learners in a secure, welcoming and unique environment; where cultures meet and diversity is celebrated.

THE AIMS OF THE BESG

We provide a broad and stimulating educational environment which encourages each child to fulfil their potential and become life-long learners.

We value each child for what they can achieve academically, psychically, socially and emotionally.

We encourage independence, responsibility and consideration for others.

We provide a stable, sensitive and welcoming atmosphere in which our children feel happy and secure.

We offer a quality education based on the English National Curriculum, which also recognises our cultural diversity.

We utilise Turkey"s distinctive geography and rich history as a resource for learning.

The BESG is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and all staff and volunteers share this commitment.

Curriculum

Curriculum
The Study Group follows the English National Curriculum. This provides teaching in the "core" subjects of English, mathematics, science and I.C.T. (Information and Communication Technology).
We also teach all the "foundation" subjects of history, geography, design and technology, art and design, music and physical education.
Children are assessed by using our own regular tests and the national tests for children in England.
Throughout all our teaching, we aim to develop skills of both excellence and self-confidence, with a balance between the academic and the creative. We wish all pupils to develop as independent learners, within a structure that is clear and supportive.
Curriculum Evenings are held during the year, in order to give parents the opportunity to see how certain subjects are covered in the study group. These are interactive evenings, where participation and questions are encouraged.
Subjects covered include Maths, English, Science and Information and Communication Technology (known as ICT). In addition we sometimes hold open afternoons where the work of the study group can be seen.
For more information on the English National Curriculum please refer to website www.nc.gov.uk. Another helpful site is www.parentscentre.gov.uk, which also has information in other languages including Turkish.
Music
In addition to our normal music lessons, the study group has provision for peripatetic music. This is provided as an optional extra, and takes place through the school day. Currently, we provide teaching for individuals or small groups. The instruments are piano, clarinet, flute and recorder at this time. Other requests will be considered.
Homework
Homework is set as a valuable extension of school learning. Times for homework vary according to age.

Care and Discipline
The ways in which children learn to co-operate, to be considerate and responsible and to value truth and honesty are parts of school life, and a vital part of growing up. The study group promotes this by establishing a caring community which is seen to both fair and just for everyone.
Children behave badly from time to time, as they struggle to control their feelings and build relationships. Normally these incidents are dealt with by the staff in their role "in loco parentis". However, with any more serious incidents parents will be contacted and invited to discuss the matter.
What we hope is that during their time at the study group all children will gain a clear understanding of what is expected of them, a sense of right and wrong and a sense of their own personal worth, both individually and to the community.
Staff Training
In order to keep up the latest curriculum developments, the staff are given various opportunities for in-service training. Twice a year consultants visit the study group for developmental training. These visits usually last two or three days, during which time the study group may be closed for one day (see the calendar / year plan).
Report & Parent-Teacher Conferences
At the start of the school year staff hold a meeting for all parents. This meeting introduces the work of the class and general matters of organisation. Later in the first term an evening consultation is held. This is also provided in the second term. At the end of the school year a report is sent home and an opportunity to discuss this provided.
Parents are able to discuss their child"s progress at other times, by prior arrangement with the class teacher or Head.

Facilities

Buses
The Study Group runs a bus service in the Cankaya, Gaziosmanpasa and Oran areas. The bus service is door-to-door, with a maximum of 15 children on each vehicle. A monitor is employed for each bus. The bus service is entirely self-financing and fares are set in September each year.

Parents are requested to ensure that they are outside at the appointed time to meet the bus, as children will not be allowed to get off the bus until they are met by a parent or other designated adult.

Lunch
The Study Group does not provide lunches. Children should bring a packed lunch. This will be eaten under supervision in the hall. The lunch monitors will try to ensure that children make a good attempt at eating the food in their packed lunch. In return, we ask parents to provide a lunch that they would reasonably expect their child to eat. Water is provided. Any drinks brought into school should be in unbreakable containers, and must not be in cans. No fast or cooked food should be sent in for children.

Security
The Study Group"s location within the Embassy compound means that we have to adopt certain security measures. These especially concern the issue of passes, which are issued to parents and / or maids and drivers of the Nursery class only.
The use of passes is regulated by simple rules:

The guards are instructed not to let anybody in without a pass.
If you forget your pass, please be prepared to wait at the gate until the guard telephones the school office.

The present system relies upon the co-operation of the Embassy.

Parents whose children do not go home on the buses collect their children from the study group gate. No child will be allowed to leave the grounds unless the parent, or a person authorised by the parent and bearing the appropriate identification, collects him/her from the gate.

If a child"s arrangements for going home change in any way parents should notify the office as soon as possible and by 2.30 pm at the latest. If there is any doubt and parents cannot be contacted, the original arrangements will remain in effect.

Swimming
Swimming is taught at Buyuk Kolej pool and is compulsory for all children.
